Dear LiveSTRONG foundation, my name is Hector Wong. I am an Information Technology Manager during the day, canoe paddler until sunset, and baker at night! On August 26th, I was injured while paddling on my one-man canoe. I was going fast for a 45 minute time trial in the open ocean. A 2-foot long needlefish leaped off the water and collided on my right foot, a few inches below my knee. I had major surgery done. The surgeon made a 4-inch cut to remove lots of fish jaws, and from what he saw he estimates the collision must have been at a force of 75 mph! my tibia bone stopped the fish, otherwise the fish would have gone thru my leg. I lost a few races, but I expect to be back in the water by September 14th. The recovery has been going fast and good, but it hasn't been easy. There was issues of loosing my leg due to fish/ocean related infection and the severity of the incision. It sounds comic, and I have not been able to write about this till now. I think it is a freak accident worth sharing. I feel lucky because the chances of this type of collision are one in a million. At the same time, I feel lucky because the fish didn't hit my chest, abdomen, or other vital parts. I lost my Oakley Livestrong sunglasses during the accident. I remember the sunglasses slipping off from my neck while I was asked to swim from my one-man canoe to the six-man canoe that came to rescue me. I loved these sunglasses because during races these are very comfortable and makes me see the water much ...
